Meet Corina Strim.

Corina grew up in the small village of Anmore, British Columbia, just outside Vancouver. She began teaching piano and theory at age sixteen and has taught ever since.

After finishing her music therapy degree, Corina spent a year working as a music therapist in palliative care at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver. There, she saw how music can reach people when words no longer can. That year shaped the way she works today.

Corina has called Canmore home since 2002. She has built a business that people trust, offering piano lessons, music therapy, and drum facilitation to a wide range of clients. For several years, she also played piano as the resident performer for the local “Oh Canada, Eh” dinner theatre.

One of her greatest influences is Kalani Das, a well known percussionist and educator whose work shows how rhythm can build community and support well being. Other artists who have shaped her love of percussion include Alexandra Jai, Mike Portnoy, Roger Duncan, Jordan Hanson, and Babatunde Olatunji.

For Corina, percussion is a way to connect. Long before we learn to speak, we respond to rhythm. The heartbeat. A voice. A steady beat that pulls people together. Whether she is working with seniors living with dementia, children in a classroom, or a group of strangers in a drum circle, rhythm gives everyone a way to take part. It breaks down barriers and reminds people that they belong.

Music can also bring back memories and express feelings that words cannot capture. People often leave her sessions feeling lighter and more connected. Some feel a sense of playfulness they have not felt in years. Many are surprised by what they can create together, no matter their music background. It is common to hear someone say, "I did not think I could do that."

Looking ahead, Corina hopes to be a strong role model for her daughter. She also hopes to travel widely and learn music from new places along the way.

For me, percussion is about connection. Whether I’m working with seniors living with dementia, children in a classroom, or participants in a community drum circle, rhythm creates a space where everyone can participate, communicate, and belong. It breaks down barriers and reminds us that we are part of something larger than ourselves.
